Research Advancement Symposia
The MCA Foundation is furthering the Community Research Agenda through a concentration on human capital and monetary investments. To accomplish the human capital investment objective, the Foundation is working to deliver a series of MCA Research Advancement Symposia to the region to better educate stakeholders on the nuances of a complex federal, state and private research industry. Conversely, these symposia serve to educate federal, state and private research organizations to the capabilities and capacity of our regional partners.
The first of such symposia occurred on February 18 and 19, 2010 in conjunction with Congressman Silvestre Reyes. It brought nine distinguished leaders of the United States Department of Health and Human Services – National Institutes of Health to the Paso del Norte region.
Over 100 healthcare leaders and elected officials attended the event. NIH distinguished representatives included Della Hann, Ph.D, acting deputy director, NIH Office of Extramural Research and Joyce Hunter, Ph.D, deputy director, National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD). After learning about El Paso, Las Cruces and Juarez research capacity and regional partnerships, the group toured the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine as well as research facilities at the University of Texas at El Paso. They answered questions about how our region can achieve more success in attaining NIH funding as minority institutions and as relatively young institutions entering a highly competitive life sciences industry.
